Scout Hike, 29th OctoBER,
Gear List, Food, Clothing.
• “Wicking” T – shirt
• 100wt (micro fleece) fleece long sleeved top
• Walking trousers/shorts
• Waterproof trousers (no jeans please!)
• Waterproof jacket
• Boots or approach shoes
• Hiking (thick) socks
• Insulated or wool hat and gloves or Scarf.
The best way of dressing for a hike is by using the
principle of layering. This method uses several thin
layers to manage bodily warmth and protection
from the elements. It’s flexible and allows you to
stay comfortable all day long.
What to carry:
• Rucksack 20 L – 35 L (two-strap over the shoulder more prefererred than one-strap!)
• Rucksack rain cover
Short/day hike items may include:
NB: A suitable packed lunch. (sandwiches, fruit, choc)
- Drink - water is prefererred and lots of it.
- Hat/ Gloves
- Route guide/map compass
- Emergency kit = Bivvy Bag, Head torch, ‘space’ blanket, first aid kit.
• Water bottle (try bring at least 2L of water)
• Healthy snacks – nuts, fruit
• Energy boosting snacks – "go bars", Chocolate, energy drinks (non-fizzy better)
Food
A suitable packed lunch is essential for this hike. We recommend some form of sandwich/bread roll with chicken or ham for example as the stable carbohydrate to give them energy throughout the hike. Also, fruits like apples/oranges/bananas are great for energy on hikes. Chocolate is also recommended for short, quick bursts of energy when needed. It can get cold on top of a mountain so a hot drink/soup in a flask can be very comforting.
*Don't forget the water!
Safety:
• First aid kit (will be supplied)
• Survival bag
• Group emergency shelter
• Emergency whistle
• Torch
• Spare batteries
• Emergency rations
Most important thing to remain safe is to never go walking off by yourself! If you have to then let someone know immediately.
Thank you very much,
YIS,
Blackrock Scout Leaders.
